I loved your site! My father was in the 36th Engineers and at the end of the war transferred to the 304th. I have blue prints of a bridge he designed that went over the Danube July 1945. It says on the plans "Autobahn bypass bridge across the Danube River. Vic. in Goldstadt." Blueprints are light sensitive so it's amazing it's still readable. I still have the seahorse and engineers pin. Cudos to you for doing this site!

My father, Richard B. Koch (still with us), was a Corporal (ended up a Sargent while en route to the Pacific) in the 1301st Engineers, Company C.
As a company clerk (was referred to as "Bubbles" because he also ran the switchboard) during the preparations for D-Day, he volunteered for motorcycle courier duties (the guys in the Motor Pool painted "Krash Koch" on the third motorcycle he drew).
In Germany, classified as a "construction foreman", Dad built Bailey Bridges, took them out later and built wooden replacements. Among other things, he cleared roads of mines, fixed sewers and cleared up after the spearhead. I'd appreciate hearing any information or recollections about these activities, hopefully, even from others who may have known him.

Thanks for the great site.

I would love to know any information or records about his service. I am researching his experiences and planning on compiling it into book form for family and relatives with my sister. Thank you so very much for the information on the 48th Engineer (C) Battalion and especially the "WE HONOR OUR DEAD" page. My cousin, Pvt Ralph Leslie is one of your honored dead. He was an only child and both his parents are deceased for many, many years. He was killed 3 days after I was born and I have the last letter he wrote home (which was to my parents) and arrived a few weeks after his death. My parents always spoke so highly of him, I feel like I know him but never had the chance to meet him. He was still in his teens. Your site has helped me walk with him in his last days. Thank you so very much.

Is there anyone who may have a photo of the enlistment group please?

I happened upon this site while trying to find out where my father had been during WWII. He was always rather reluctant to talk about anything related to actual combat. I have tons of silly stories, but nothing that helps me understand where he was during that time and what he endured. A Certificate of Service record says he was with the 540th, maybe between 7/42 and 2/46, but I don't understand Army lingo so I'm rather confused. I'm hoping this site and any others like it can aid in my quest.

What a wonderful tribute to your father and all the brave men and women who fought for our freedom - daddy would have loved this site and all the information - and memories gathered here. Lt. Col John C. "Jack" O'Brien died last Feb 17, 2004. One week prior to daddy's death and old 'army buddy', Kenneth Kleinbach, called him to visit. They spoke for almost 40 minutes. It was the most animated I had seen daddy speak in weeks.

Thank you for providing a connection for those who served together.

Dear Marion,
I'm the airfield historian of Coleman Army Airfield at Sandhofen/Mannheim, Germany. This base was called during ww2 Fliegerhorst Sandhofen. I do write a book on its history and during my research came across your site. Really nice and so much info.
I still search for info on the units or pictures of the bailey bridge that the US Engineers build during their crossing here on 26th March 1945. The units were supposedly the 7th INF, 3rd DIV with the 540th Engineering Combat Group, the 85th Engineering heavy Pontoon Bat, the 2832 and 2833d Eng Regt and the 343rd and 344th Eng Regt. I have searched so much but could find no details on that bridge that was build in the vicinity of Sandhofen, where also a small battle was fought. I know there is a picture out there but can't find it anymore.
Can anyone help me, Please!!
Thanks from Germany
Dirk

This is a great site. I have just gotten the Holland book...I know, I know...it's something I should have done BEFORE my trip there, but...
Anyway, I really like Burgett's first person P.O.V. writing, and am sailing through the book...However, i often have to take a break from it to make sure I'm absorbing and remembering, not just reading the words.. (does that make sense?).

Anyway, great site.

Hello,

My name is Keith Dominick. I am a 30 year old career firefighter in
Maryland. On my off days I collect W.W. II items such as uniforms,
patches, helmets, hats, knives, etc... I have been collecting since the
age of 13 and am looking for items to add to my collection.

I prefer to obtain the items directly from the veteran or the family if
possible. This way i have a name, face, and stories to go with the
item. This makes it more interesting to me and also helps to keep that veterans
experiences around for as long as possible. If you or anyone that you know
has any items that they would like to have a good home and be
appreciated, please feel free to contact me by e mail.

Thank you for your great service to our country,

Keith Dominick

Fantastic website about a great man. I mean Mr. Burgett. Do you have some information if he is coming to Europe this year? I read all his books and would like to meet him.

Hi Marion:
A great job your doing. I was directed to your site by Gene Fiducia, an Internet friend. I was a member of the 1301st Engineeer General Service Regiment assigned to Patton's 3rd Army. Got sent direct to New Guinea after VE Day. FSU's history dept is doing a great job. Don't hesitate to sent Vets there. I think Gene gave their net address.

Marion, I visited the page that lists decorations, awards, etc. earned by the 540th. It seems that some are missing, if I read correctly. Was it a complete listing? You are doing a great job, THANKS.

Great Job! I'm with Co. A, 2nd Ptln, 51st ECB (reenactors) whose site you had visited. I thoroughly enjoyed your website especially the photo sections. There's a lot of good stuff there. Also wanted to mention that I'm related to Maj. Gen'l Crittenberger whose photo you've displayed. For some reason, he changed the spelling of our last name while he was in college. I have found and have visited his gravesite in Arlington National Cemetary in Va. Two of his sons are buried there also.

Through the ages, we all question the heritage and lineage that has gotten us to where we are. The history of our fathers and grandfathers are not written into the academic courses and studies in our schools today. By sharing the stories and pictures, through the wonders of the "WWW" world, we are able to document and save the legacies that have been passed from one generation to the next. Through your efforts, and mine, and the efforts of many others like us, some day a young child will be able to view the pictures and read the stories to find the answer to "Daddy, what did you do in the war?"..... Keep up the good work and keep digging for the answers, for someday a child will ask the question.

Excellent website. Perhaps you'd enjoy reading ours. Please check out www.georgethomasclark.com -- the author's official web page, which features information about his biographical novel HITLER HERE. This work is unique because all the characters have bylines and thus the opportunity to reveal what they did and how they felt during an era of unprecedented destruction.
The online excerpts are from the points-of-view of Hitler and six other characters.

At the recent Frankfurt Book Fair, HITLER HERE generated reading copy requests from several foreign publishers, and the English language rights in India have just been sold to Mastermind Books.

Sincerely,

Dennis Caetano

Hi Mare: I've known you but a short time, although through my good buddy Art, it is much longer. We enjoyed our visit up in ALGER with you and hubby Lee. I really don't know how you do everything you do in 24 hours. You really are a 10 foot dynamo in a 5 foot frame.
It tickled me the way you chewed out that(little boy hacker ) that's been messing up your site. His MOMMY should take the razor strop to his pink little bottom.
Enough of that. Good luck on your site. I know you truly love what you are doing. It's nice to see young people like you, who want to know what it was like for their loved ones to be
away from home and family, fighting, but too young to know why.and praying they luck out.
I enlisted in the Army Air Corps but was in radio & radar schools till the war in Europe ended, which put me on a much different "Ship" than a B-17. That I will enlarge upon later.
God bless all those who faught the good fight and those who gave their all.

The Best,
Chuck

Marion this is such a wonderful site, a wealth of information. I am very grateful for the help that you have given me in my search for records of my father and hopefully to find some of the men he served with, all the pictures he had taken were lost and we are hoping that somebody out there might have some of him and his buddies. He didn't talk much about his experiences so we didn't have much to go on. I was able to obtain some letters he had written to a relative and found out that he was in the 97th "Trident" Division which saw overseas service in Europe from late January 45. From his address on his letters it also states he was in the Army Ground Forces Replacement Depot. If anybody out there knew a Sgt. Eric Lavere Frisell, which I guess was known as "Fizz", I would appreciate hearing from them. He also speaks of being at Fort Ord, and Camp Roberts and San Fransisco. Again thank you so much Marion, such a tribute to the greatest generation, which I truly feel they were. Sincerely, Glory Ann
